Laptop’s disappearance jeopardizes Registered Travelers’ security

An unencrypted laptop with the personal information of 33,000 people disappeared on July 26. The laptop belonged to Verified Identity Pass Inc. — the company that operates Registered Traveler under the brand name Clear. It resurfaced a week later in its original San Francisco International Airport office with no explanation.

Potentially compromised information includes applicants’ names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and passport or alien registration numbers. Social security numbers, credit information and iris scans were not a part of the laptop’s database.

Verified Identify Pass CEO Steven Brill says the security of the personal information was not breached. An investigation is underway.

Enrollment for the Verified Identity Pass program has been suspended until applicant information can be encrypted.
