Sailing the seas of green

Published: January 3, 2007

Holland America Cruise Line’s Vista-class cruise ships (Noordam, Westerdam and Oosterdam) were awarded the 2006 Green Planet Award (pdf link) for outstanding environmental standards by Kuoni Switzerland, a global travel company promoting ecological responsibility in the travel industry.

The cruise line’s fleetwide program emphasizes waste reduction and recycling, compliance with international environmental guidelines, and the use of cleaner-burning propulsion technology. Each ship has an environmental officer who oversees shipboard compliance and procedures.

At last year’s award ceremony, six Royal Caribbean International and three Celebrity Cruises ships earned Kuoni’s seal of eco-approval for their programs, which included onboard recycling, waste management, energy and fresh water conservation, crew training and guest communications initiatives.
