Wyndham’s Super 8 chain attracts business travelers

Published: November 1, 2006

Not many people would consider Super 8 motels suitable accommodations for business travel, but lower and mid-level executives from Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Cardinal Health and Deloitte & Touche frequent the chain, and say what they find surpasses expectations.

Free WiFi access, complimentary hot breakfasts, curved shower rods, upgraded mattresses and towels — all upgrades mandated by parent company Wyndham have raised the quality of the rooms, but not inflated the room rates, which average $53 a night. (The average cost of a Marriott full-service room is $150, plus $13 for Internet access; Four Seasons standard rooms can go for upwards of $300 and still charge an additional $10 for Internet access.)

Super 8 locations are another reason why business travelers account for half of the chain’s business. The hotels ring major cities and are within the city limits of Houston, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles.
