New X-ray and CT scan machines operating at Atlanta’s airport
Published: August 29, 2006
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport implemented a new $170 million luggage screening system at its North Terminal in July, and expects the system to extend to the South Terminal by the end of this month. Passengers no longer have to bring luggage from ticket check-in counters to lobby x-ray machine. Bags now are taken directly from the ticket counter conveyer belts to a row of explosive-detection machines, capable of screening more than 8,600 bags an hour. Bags flagged for suspicious shapes, density or unidentified objects are directed to an underground screening room for further inspection.
