Biloxi casinos reopen

Published: January 11, 2006

Three of 13 casinos destroyed by Hurricane Katrina along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast reopened in time for New Year’s Eve. The 70,000-sq. ft. Imperial Palace on Biloxi’s Back Bay reconfigured and upgraded its facilities to repair minimal water damage and passageways leading from the casino to its land-based lobby. The casino also added slot machines, live table games and a 16-table poker room.

The Isle of Capri Casino Resort Biloxi (Isle-Biloxi) and the Palace Casino opened in temporary, land-based facilities, taking advantage of new Mississippi gaming regulations allowing casinos to move inland and rebuild 800 feet from the water’s edge.

“Reopening the Isle-Biloxi marks a major milestone for the state of Mississippi,” said President and CEO Tim Hinkley. “This casino was the first casino to open in the market back in 1992, and we are the first land-based casino to open following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.”
