Per diem allowances rise

Published: October 8, 2005

The General Service Administration increased the standard daily allowance for meals, incidental expenses and lodging for government travel in most markets for fiscal year 2006. New per diem rates went into effect Oct. 1.

In the cities where government meetings book the greatest number of rooms, the average allowed per diem rate is higher than it was in 2005, although it remains slightly lower than what was allowed in 2004.

Final lodging per diem rates increased in Washington, D.C. ($145-187), Denver ($119), Dallas ($95-104), San Francisco ($130), Atlanta ($115) and Boston ($165). Lodging per diems decreased in Los Angeles ($96); Norfolk, Va. ($106); San Diego ($120-127); and San Antonio ($89).

Due to increased gas prices, the Internal Revenue Service has temporarily increased the mileage rate to 48.5 cents a mile, but is waiting to see if gas prices stabilize before setting 2006 rates.
