Want sustainable events?

Telluride & Golf Resort has received the National Ski Area Association’s Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence, the Regional Forester’s Caring for the Land Stewardship Award and certification by Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary System for golf courses. In addition to conservation and recycling programs, the resort has extensive education and community programs, including wildlife, cultural and outdoor educational programs that are available to guests year-round.

Want attendees to feel like VIPs?

Telluride’s first high-end luxury hotel, the 84-room Capella Telluride already made Condé Nast’s Hot List, was ranked a Top Winter Retreat by the tony Robb Report and was named a “dream escape” by Travel + Leisure, so chances are it will impress even the most jaded attendee. The resort has more than 11,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including a 3,300-sq. ft. divisible ballroom (capacity: 180 banquet/270 reception) and an outdoor plaza (capacity: 220 banquet/400 reception). If extra space is needed, the Telluride Conference Center is half a block away and has an additional 14,000 square feet of meeting space (capacity: 400 banquet/900 reception).

Want warm-weather activities?

Schedule a half-day rafting trip down the San Miguel, Dolores or Uncompahgre rivers; kayaking trips also are available. The region offers excellent waterfowl hunting and trout fly-fishing; options include half-day or multi-day trips. Guided 4×4 tours combine history with scenic exploration. Telluride and Mountain Village have mountain bike trails; overnight accommodations along the trail stretch 206 miles from Telluride to Moab, Utah, and are known as the San Juan Hut System. Golf courses are open from the end of May through the beginning of October, weather permitting. Planners also can arrange group rock-climbing lessons and trips, motorcycle ATV tours or horseback trail rides.

Want winter activities?

Skiing is the main attraction, of course, and there is a snowboarding park. Two-hour snowmobile tours take attendees to historic Alta Lakes; full-day trips treat guests to hot springs and a gourmet lunch. Sleigh rides can be engaged on their own or as transportation to a meal function. Fly-fishing trips also are available during the cold months. Guided ice climbing, dog sledding and snowshoe tours are other options.

Want to pamper attendees?

The Atmosphere Spa, located at the base of the gondola, has a variety of facial and body treatments. Aromatherapy Spa Salon and Boutique is a full-service Jurlique-affiliated spa that also offers mobile services and spa parties. All three have oxygen-enriched treatments to help guests adjust to the altitude.

Want group dining?

Italian fine-dining restaurant Rustico Ristorante can host wine dinners and private parties. La Marmotte features seasonal, local and organic produce prepared French-American-style. In Mountain Village, La Piazza has a banquet facility for private meals or meetings and a catering department. At Allred’s Restaurant (capacity: 120), diners feast on contemporary American cuisine 10,551 feet above sea level; a private party room (capacity: 30) overlooks the town of Telluride.

Want a festive backdrop?

Telluride is host to a few high-profile festivals. The Telluride Jazz Festival features the best classic/mainstream jazz, international jazz and blues artists. The Sheridan Opera House hosts the Wild West Fest, a week-long celebration of Western arts, culture and customs. (Incidentally, the historic 240-seat theater also may be booked for private functions.) The Telluride Wine Festival is a celebration of wine and food, featuring tastings and seminars led by chefs and sommeliers. The streets are filled with artists participating in the Telluride Plein Air Festival, a celebration of outdoor painting. The Telluride Film Festival screens independent, foreign and popular films at nine venues throughout the town. The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival celebrates the best microbrews from more than 50 independent breweries and has a full roster of live blues, rock, funk, gospel and soul music.

What you should know

When residents of Colorado's picturesque ski resorts go on vacation, they head to Telluride. In a state known for its natural attractions, this southwestern Colorado village truly stands out. Surrounded by the San Juan mountains in a box canyon, there are more than 2,000 ski-able acres, with 24 percent of the terrain designated for beginners, 38 percent for intermediate skiers and 38 percent reserved for experts. All slopes are accessible from Telluride or Mountain Village, a mid-mountain town connected to Telluride by a free gondola.

What will surprise you

Telluride's Victorian-era National Historic District is six blocks wide and 12 blocks long, and all stores are independently owned — locals are committed to preserving Telluride's colorful history and spirit. Originally a summer destination for the Ute Indians, Telluride was settled as the Columbia silver mining camp in the mid-1870s; it didn't become a ski resort until 1973. The Telluride Conference Center in Mountain Village has a state-of-the-art video conferencing system that supports up to six separate participating sites. With advance notice, the conference center's video hookup can be moved to any other Mountain Village venue.

Getting there

Year-round, Montrose Regional Airport (1.5 hours from Telluride) has flights to/from Denver, Salt Lake City, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston. From December through March, direct flights also come in from Phoenix, Newark, Chicago and Los Angeles. United Express and America West Express provide service to Telluride Regional Airport, which is five miles west of town. Attendees can also fly in to La Plata County Airport (3 hours away) or Grand Junction-Walker Field Airport (2.5 hours away). Airport transportation ranges from private shuttles to luxury limousines. By car, Telluride is 7 hours from Denver, 6 hours from Colorado Springs, and 6.5 hours from Albuquerque, N.M, and Flagstaff, Ariz., but the scenery more than makes up for the time spent getting there.
