Mesquite: Real Texas flavor

By Ashley L. Brazzel

Want Western-style group fun?

Nothing says Wild, Wild West quite like bull riding and cow roping. At the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, groups can take part in the fun with the public or enjoy catered BBQ and a private rodeo show. Other options include a new open-air suite where attendees can get a bird’s eye view of the entire arena. The suite also is available during the off-season. Rodeo City Music Hall offers Branson-style musical entertainment, featuring mostly country and western, bluegrass and gospel tunes. There’s also intimate, theater-style meeting space to accommodate small groups. The Double D Ranch sits on a 70-acre homestead, complete with grassy outdoor pavilions and an expansive lake. The site accommodates groups of up to 5,000 people for anything from horseback trail rides to paddleboat trips. There are two meeting-specific rooms: the Mustang Corral, which seats up to 700 guests, and the Ranch House, which seats up to 150. The ranch offers an array of team-building activities, including paddleboat racing, target roping, scavenger hunts and cow-milking contests. Groups also can take part in Murder Mystery lunches.

Want unique off-site venues?

Resistol Arena, home of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, seats 5,500 and has a 24,000-sq. ft. arena floor that can be used for exhibits, dinners and more. The Mesquite Arts Center is home to many of the city’s cultural organizations, including its symphony orchestra and community theater group. The facility has a 500-seat performance hall, a theater and several art galleries that showcase both permanent and rotating exhibits. In addition to its rentable theater and concert hall space, there’s also a 125-person meeting room onsite.

Want group dining?

The Rows of Texas, Mesquite’s shopping, dining and entertainment district, has more than 100 restaurants. The diversity of dining options makes it an ideal choice for dine-arounds, and most offer meeting space, too. The Martinez Restaurant serves homestyle Mexican food and offers a customizable catering menu. Its bright and airy banquet room can be decorated and seats 100 guests. There’s also a free, semi-private party room that holds up to 30 people. The lively BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse serves classic comfort foods with a twist. In addition to its off-site catering menu, buffets can be tailored for groups up to 100 in its semi-private dining room. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has private dining space for up to 50 people and offers full-service off-site catering, including a buffet delivery option.

What you should know

Just 13 miles east of downtown Dallas, Mesquite is authentic Texas. With its Old West flair, progressive mindset and vibrant arts and entertainment community, it's also a place where old meets new. Groups can expect to find state-of-the-art meeting facilities, an array of cultural activities, great shopping, and of course, championship rodeos. Mesquite is accessible from four major highways, making travel to and from the Metroplex quick and convenient. While the city's largest meeting space is in the Big Town Exhibit Hall (over 100,000 square feet), most groups choose to meet in the 54,000-sq. ft. Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibit Hall, which is connected to the 160-room Hampton Inn.

What will surprise you

Mesquite has all the charm of a small town, but with the amenities and attractions you would expect from a larger city (the largest megaplex in the world, the AMC 30 Mesquite, is located here and its 30-screen, 6,092-seat theater can be rented for various meetings and events). However, you'll often pay less to meet here than you would in larger cities. Mesquite's 220 days of sunshine a year and average daily temperature of 65 degrees makes hosting outdoor events possible year round.
