What you should know
  • Colorado Springs is popular with athletic and military groups due to its major sports facilities and five military installations (Fort Carson, U.S. Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Schriever Air Force Base and Peterson Air Force Base). But, it's also known as a resort town with world-class facilities and intriguing Western-themed attractions. The city was founded on gold dust, which is why planners can find accommodations, restaurants and special facilities in ranches, Victorian-era mansions and gold mines.
What will surprise you
  • The city has a great view of the "purple mountain majesties," and the locale inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," but Colorado Springs is not in the mountains. It sits at the foothills, which means a year-round moderate climate where golf and other outdoor activities are possible. The Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Center can help planners arrange pre- or post-convention ski trips in nearby Breckenridge.
