Tips

More than 140 businesses are open along New Orleans’ Magazine Street, as listed in the 2006 Shopper’s Guide. For more good news about where to shop and eat in the Big Easy, visit magazinestreet.com or nomcvb.com.

Things we like

Poolside drinks at Hotel Zaza in Dallas — an upbeat, eclectic, creative environment perfect for after-meeting revivals. Make sure to duck into the outside comfort station and check out the seashell chandelier.

There’s a lot to love at the Westin Savannah (Ga.) Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, but one of the best amenities is the 90-second water ferry ride to Historic Downtown from the hotel’s floating dock. The ferries scuttle back and forth from early morning until midnight, making it easy for meeting attendees to enjoy some independent sightseeing, barhopping, dining or shopping. The 6,000-sq. ft. harbor front is an ideal setting for special events, especially an evening reception under the stars, with the lights of downtown Savannah glittering in the distance. One popular theme is a pirate’s hideaway with the great lawn fitted out with plenty of casks, pilings and Jolly Rogers flags.

More and more hotels are becoming entirely smoke-free, and many have adopted “green” practices, such as letting guests decide how often they want their linens changed. Now, comes another environment-friendly enhancement. The Doubletree Hotel Tucson at Reid Park offers Pure Allergy Friendly Rooms, making it the first hotel with such an amenity in Arizona. The rooms, which underwent extensive renovations, are designed to ensure guests an environment where every guestroom surface is treated to minimize contaminants, irritants and odors.
